When The Recruiter Calls

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Judi Perkins Recruiting, retained or contingency, involves (or should, anyway) directly approaching individuals who, based on their title or position, might well have the experience to handle the job description and position for which the client is seeking someone. The individuals who are approached, of course, are usually currently employed at one of the client’s competitors. If that individual is you, what would you do? What would you do when a recruiter calls and briefly outlines an opportunity with an unnamed company? Obviously if you’re unhappy where you are and the opportunity sounds interesting, you’re going to bite. But I’m not talking about that scenario. I’m talking about the response when you ARE happy where you are. Because there’s a smart way to respond and a not-so-smart way to respond. And either choice impacts your career far more than you’d think it does! So there you are, sitting at your desk working on an important project, when the phone rings. And you pick it up. It’s a recruiter, who introduces himself, his firm, and asks if you have a minute. What do you say? “Thanks for calling, but I’m happy where I am.” And hang up the phone? WRONG ANSWER!!!! Why? Because you just cut yourself off from knowing what’s moving and shaking in your industry, which means you just cut yourself off from hearing about unadvertised opportunities that could potentially leverage your career. You’ve just made the decision to limit your options. And if you don’t have access to information, you can’t make an informed decision, can you? What should you do instead? No matter how happy you are with your current company, listen to what the recruiter has to say. You have a far better chance of leveraging your career when a recruiter calls you rather than when (and if) you contact a recruiter. There are people who are truly happy with their current position and not interested in currently making a change, regardless of the opportunity presented to them at that moment. But you listen anyway, not to change, but to develop a relationship and keep yourself informed and in control for you when you do need to change. A friend of mine went with a company that had statewide offices. She began in their corporate office right out of college. Over the years, she obtained her MBA and continued to rise through the ranks. For TWENTY-FIVE years she was with this company…..until she was laid off a few months ago. She hadn’t seen it coming. And she freaked out. If YOU aren’t in control of your career, then your company IS. Corporate restructuring, layoffs and downsizing are taking place with alarming frequency as companies tighten their belts and look hard at who is contributing and who isn’t. Sometimes it isn’t even a matter of contribution. In those plushy carpeted, window offices, the top executives and board members comfortably decide whose heads will roll and for what reason. Sometimes it’s simply eliminating an entire department - and it has nothing to do with YOU, individually, at all. For instance, it’s not uncommon for a new manager or president to come in and bring his own people with him. But it can happen that quickly, and it can happen to you. Will you have a network to fall back on if it does? Will you have relationships developed with recruiters that you can tap into on a moment’s notice? Develop it before you need it. The time to take control of your career is exactly when you think it isn’t necessary: when you are happy and successful where you are. Obesity Statistics

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By Damian Sofsian The most recent research statistics on growing obesity disclose a dangerously overweight world population. During the last 10 years, there was a dramatic increase in obesity in the world, especially in the United States, England, and Canada. Over the years, the occurrence of obesity has also steadily increased among all genders, ages, all education levels, and ethnic groups. Obesity is a severe health condition where a person accumulates an abnormally high proportion of body fat. This condition can increase risk of diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. The body mass index (BMI) is the common method used to determine obesity and is based on the relation between height and weight. Obesity research shows that the condition of obese increase with age. Around 28% of men and 27% of women aged 16-24 are obese in the world. But, about 76% of men and 68% of women between 55 and 64 of ages are obese. According to the American National Center for Health statistics, between 1962 and 2000, the number of obese people in the US raised from 13% to an alarming 31%. Today, about 63% of Americans are overweight (men and women are about equally represented) with a BMI of 25 or more. Around 31% of US people (supplementary to overweight) are obese with a BMI in excess of 30. Compared to the past two decades, the percentage of childhood obesity in the US has more than tripled. If this trend continues, it is predicted that at least 1/3rd of US adults will be obese by 2020. The US surgeon general report reveals that morbid obesity is liable for thousands of deaths every year. In England, approximately 46% of men and 32% of women are overweight (a BMI of 25-30), and an extra 17% of men and 21% of women are obese. How to Attract Women in Chat Rooms

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By Steve Miles The Internet gives access to chatting rooms where one can find people of ones own age and make new friends. This is a very interesting concept and has most of the youth of this generation hooked on to it. This is a real new and innovative way of making friends, with no strings attached, and its a lot of fun too. How to attract women in chat rooms? First of all, if you are looking for a standard set of rules that will work with all women, forget it. If anyone claims to have such a magic formula, he must either be extremely ignorant or fraudulent. Each woman is different and what attracts one woman might even annoy another. Is there no way, then, by which you can equip yourself, and improve your chances of attracting women online? There certainly is, but the point is that one can only give general guidelines about how a majority of people react. You still have to use your common sense and your faculties to fine-tune your approach as you go along. Now lets look at what generally attracts women to men online or not. There are certain major differences between a man and a woman particularly when it comes to being attracted to the opposite sex. A woman is less influenced by physical appearance and more attracted by personality traits. A woman is also slower in building a relationship but prefers to sustain it over a long term. In other words, a woman looks for signals of traits that she values, takes time to allow the relationship to mature and looks for a lasting relationship. The concept of online chat rooms has basically opened up an arena where one gets to meet new people and get to know them with no strings attached. The whole point is to have some fun and make new friends. There is nothing serious in this entire scheme of things. But then girls cant totally shed their natural inhibitions and they do expect some seriousness in the opposite person. In an online chatting situation, the first point to remember is that the other person doesnt get to see you. The opening lines should show you as a fairly serious guy open to a bit of fun. Since you really do not know the person at the other end, you must be careful to use a false name, to start with. This throws up a number of possibilities as well as problems. On the brighter side, it gives you an opportunity to think of an attractive name that suggests just a touch of boisterousness without being frivolous. On the downside, this may portray you as not very dependable, when the truth is known. So youll have to work out ways to handle that. Many studies have shown that women like a sense of humor. So, once you have broken the ice, see if you can show yourself up as a guy who can create a little laughter, but remember not to show yourself up as a flirtatious person, at least not to start with. In the beginning, one should try not to use pick up lines and ask for one night stands from a female. There are possibilities that this might ruin your chances of attracting the female. It is always good to get the girl to a better comfort level with you before becoming closer and maybe more explicit. You should also have the necessary confidence, and exhibit it through your words to woo the female. It is the confidence that is perceived through your words and manners, while talking to a female that attracts her to carry on chatting with you. Remember, during online chats nobody is seriously wanting to have a relation; so make sure that you dont make clich love statements at the very start of the chat, this usually turns off the female instead of attracting her. In the final analysis, its ones own style and manners that stand out and attract a female. Although nobody can give you standard rules to follow, there are a number of tips that we can give. To sum up, a woman looks more at the personality traits of a man, takes time to build a relationship and looks forward to a more lasting relationship. In the virtual world of chat rooms, you have to portray yourself as the guy who meets these requirements through your words and approach. You start by selecting an appropriate online name, show just a touch of humor and a hint of naughtiness, proceed slowly without becoming overt and explicit too fast, and maintain a posture that reveals you as a responsible but fun loving individual. Above all, be sensitive to the signals that you yourself receive and be prepared to make mid-course corrections. Best of luck and happy wooing. Is Insomnia Causing Your Depression or is Depression Causing Your Insomnia?

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Tommy Thompson Insomnia and depression, two very serious problems individually can be a disaster when they occur at the same time. Depression and insomnia together can put you in a cycle that only gets worse if left untreated. When the body is tired and fatigued from lack of sleep, depression is a likely result. And when depressed it may be difficult to get the good quality sleep your body requires. Depression symptoms may include huge mood swings, sadness for no apparent reason, crying for no apparent reason and irritability for any small matter as well as insomnia. You may be taking medication for depression that is keeping you from a good nights sleep. Not being able to obtain your regular rest at night for long periods of time, you can have different types of side effects such as irritability, fatigue, loss of appetite or increase in appetite, lack of attention and that can be dangerous in itself if you are driving, cooking or using dangerous tools at the place of work. Insomnia also frequently causes extreme sadness, anxiety and depression. If you are experiencing both insomnia and depression you will need to decide if you may be feeling depressed because you are exhausted or suffering from sleepless nights because of your depression, stress or anxiety. It may be easier to treat insomnia than depression, so you may want to delve into treating that first. An herbal supplement called SerenitePlus was formulated to induce a state of drowsiness and deep relaxation, relieve anxiety and stress. Herbal supplements are perfect for treating many disorders because there is no risk of addiction as with prescription medications. You may find that once you have gotten the proper rest your depression symptoms decrease or even go away completely. When the body is rested you are able to cope better with daily stress. Finger Foods Made Easy

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Morgan Hamilton Each year a block party is organized and now it was our turn to be in charge of the event. This responsibility rotates from one home to the next in our small community. Our houses are stretched along a lake and the block party involves 12 homes. The host family is supposed to take care of the food and beverages. This year it was decided that finger foods were to be served at the block party. I found this idea appealing as by serving finger foods the host family could prepare all the food beforehand and would be able to enjoy this annual block party visiting with our neighbors. I found quite many recipes for salty and sweet finger foods in my recipe books. As our annual block party starts at 3pm and end at about 7pm we had to provide food that was substantial enough to be considered a meal. Many children come to our parties as well, so we also had to provide foods that they would like. My husband and I went to the supermarket a few days before the party and bought all the products we needed according to our recipes. There were breads for sandwiches and many cold cuts and cheeses. Other products we purchased were for dips, spreads and salsas which would enrich the selection of our finger foods. We made the sandwiches and cut them in triangles and set them on trays. Apart from that, we put large plates of fresh vegetables with many dips around the gathering area. As far as sweet finger foods are concerned, I personally baked many cookies and bars several days before the event which I kept frozen until the day of the party. The special children finger foods were hot dogs and ice cream on a stick. We used streamers and balloons for decorations for the block party. We also put some lawn chairs near the lake. Some of them were set up in the sun; others were put in the deep shade, so that any of our guests would feel comfortable. Everyone fancied the idea of moving from one place to another while having a bite in the afternoon. This proved to be a brilliant idea because there was more time to visit as there was no set meal and people shouldn’t be gathered at the same time. The finger foods turned out to be a big hit and many guests said they would also serve finger foods when they host the annual block party. After the party was over the cleaning up was very easy and fast. The food which was left was very little and easy to be stored. I believe my husband and I started a new tradition which will be continued on our annual block parties. Hungry? South African Food Offers An Amazing Variety in Dishes

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Sarah H Many people get fed up of eating the same thing for dinner week after week. For those who have an adventurous palette South African food can be a great change! The incredible blend of cooking style, presentation and spices can be attributed to this nations incredible history. South Africa has emerged as a polyglot cuisine. Many factors have contributed to this, such as: European colonization, the adaptation of the native Bantu cooking, and massive immigration of foreigners and workers. The Dutch settlers brought with them their specific forms of agriculture, and the British merchants imported the “mixed grills” that now include African game meats. French cultivated the vineyards, known worldwide today. The Malay contribution was the curries, adding spice to a traditionally drab English-Dutch influence. The Indians of the British Empire who came to construct railroads influenced South African cuisine with dals, lentil soups, and curries. Game meat or as it is often called: wild meat, and lamb, the famous South African lobster, and a wide variety of fish add to a truly cosmopolitan cuisine. However in the smaller towns where mostly native Africans reside, the main meals remain starch and stew based. South Africa’s most unusual meat is called Biltong. Its a spicy form of jerky, usually wind-dried, and is commonly used in traveling. This can be found not only country wide, but throughout Africa. African villages boast of the more traditional African foods. The villagers diet often consist of milk, curds and whey, and dishes of steamed or boiled green vegetables, peas, beans, and cereals. And of course not a day can go by without the starches: cassava, yams, and sweet potatoes. Outside of Muslim Africa, alcoholic beverages contribute to an integral part of the African diet. South Africa is celebrated for the production of good quality white and red wines. In addition to this South Africa also produces a tangerine based liqueur called Van Der Hum. Tusker, the famous Kenyan beer, is exported for those who want to recreate a meal. Beer goes well with most African cuisine. South Africa is home to numerous population groups with different languages, cultural backgrounds and origins. The province of Natal is home to about one million Indians, whose forefathers came to South Africa to work on the sugarcane plantations. In addition to this there are also about three million people of mixed race, commonly dubbed “coloureds,” living in the Cape region. They are descendants of the first Dutch settlers and the native population of the Cape (Khoikhoi) or the Malays, who were taken to South Africa as slaves from East India in the 18th century. Thus South African cuisine is a true reflection of the cooking talents and traditions of all these peoples. The Advantage and Consequences of New Economy Marketing

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Abe Cherian Some of the research that has been done today gives us alot of information on the values of today’s society. WhatI’m referring to is a lifestyle in which there is more todo in generally less time in which to accomplish it.There’s more to spend money on so there’s less disposableincome. Quite often there’s just one parent instead of thetraditional two parents. Safety and security is important,Quality and value are more important than ever. People arewilling to pay more for desired quality. People are alsowilling to withdraw from the unnecessary and focus onessential stuff, and Convenience is extremely important.Consumers are having a wild time with technology. The 90’s have been characterized as the “Decade of Decency”and such trends have been projected as cocooning andburrowing (staying at home), socializing withsimilarly-minded people in smaller groups, backpacking,4-wheel drive vehicles, antirich, anti-big,anti-professional backlash has been happening. Dumping the corporate grind for small-town quality life.Self service niche type products and services and selfindulgences such as fresh flowers and Godiva chocolates.Adults are acting like teenagers. Golden Oldies now appealto the youngsters as well as the 40’s crowd. Fitness buffsare on a super quest for health. Vigilante consumers whoread the labels, protest and boycott. People want it now..People are becoming socially responsible. If you use these items in your marketing, given this newlifestyle, and you wish to sell these people who make upthis new lifestyle, you need to be prepared to target yourmarketing efforts toward these segments. Some of the characteristics you need to address are makingyour business products and services appear to be necessarywhen this market is with drawing from the unnecessary. Youneed to compete for the potential customer’s time andattention when they’re already overscheduled and subjectedto too much stimulation. You need to connnunicate the legitimate quality of yourproduct and services in a world where every business seemsto make the same claim of quality. and reliability. Youneed to target those individuals who have an interest inyour business as products and services and they have themoney to spend on them. You do this with target marketing. Two very critical strategies for this marketing missioninclude the correct identification of your USA (UniqueSelling Advantage) and test marketing every phase of yourbusiness and marketing plan, and your product and servicedevelopment. Remember that in selling, time is money! Therefore, youmust allocate only so much time to each prospect. How To Sew Lined Shoe Bags For Golf, Tennis, Bowling, Gym, Dance or any Other Drawstring Bag

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Marian Lewis Sewing shoe bags for the guys or gals in your life is a great gift idea. No matter what sport or hobby they enjoy or where they travel. . .far away or to the gym, shoe bags or drawstring bags come in handy. The how to sew sewing instructions are for a lined drawstring shoe bag. You are the designer. You can decide the purpose, fabric, design and size of your drawstring bag. Here are some suggestions. Fabrics Use whatever fabric suits your fancy. About 1/2 yard of fabric makes one shoe bag. Sturdier fabrics like denim, canvas, slipcover fabric, fake suede, corduroy, etc. work well for sturdier shoes. Fine fabrics like velour, velvet, cottons, flannels, etc. are good for dressier shoes. Think about satin or silk for lingerie bags or jewelry bags. Or use mesh or terry for the beach or laundry bags. Lining is optional. But, if you line the bags, choose a compatible lining fabric that won’t tear easily especially for the sturdier shoes. Sometimes the same fabric is the best lining. The instructions here are for a lined drawstring bag. You may want to use washable fabrics so you can launder the bags later. Preshrink all fabrics before cutting. Drawstrings Use a pair of 36 inch long decorative shoe laces or leather laces for each bag or heavy cord or sew your own fabric or fake suede drawstrings. Ribbon also works. Sizes Sew a test bag to see if the dimensions are right for you. Cut one bag with the following suggested dimensions. Place the shoe inside and check to see if it fits well. Add or subtract from the length or width to adjust for whatever shoe or item that you have. Suggested Sizes For 2 golf shoe bags, cut 4 pieces of fabric 20 inches long and 11 inches wide. Cut 4 pieces of lining 19 inches long and 10-1/2 inches wide. Note: Cut an extra drawstring bag for a golf ball bag. Two bowling shoes will fit into one shoe bag. Cut 2 pieces of fabric 20 inches long and 11 inches wide. Cut 2 lining 19 inches long and 10-1/2 inches wide. One bag may also hold 2 tennis shoes or 2 ladies dress shoes. Gym shoes vary in size. For extra large or small shoes, measure around the shoe and adjust the size of the fabric plus seam allowances to accommodate the size of the shoe. How To Sew Sewing Technique Decorate the Shoe Bag Make the drawstring bag unique with a special design or emblem. Think about monogramming the bags or adding a sport motif applique or embroidery design prior to stitching. Place the design about 3 inches from the bottom in the center of one of the 20 x 11 pieces. After you trim the bag, place 2 bag pieces right sides together. Measure and make a mark 5 inches down from the top of the bag on both sides. Stitch 1/2 inch seam around bag starting and stopping at this 5 inch mark. Do not back stitch. For the first and last inch, use short stitches. Repeat stitching as above for the lining. Press all seams open on both bag and the lining. Press under 1/2 inch on the unstitched 5 inch bag side edges. Fuse or stitch to hold. Do the same for the lining. Turn the bag right side out. Turn the lining right side out. Machine stitch 1/2″ at the bottom of the lining as if you were making a French seam. This creates a strong edge. Turn the lining wrong side out. Slip the lining down into the bag so that the top edge of the lining is 1/2 inch below the the top edge of the bag. Fold the top edge of the front of the bag down 1/2 inch over the lining. Press this fold to make a crease. Now, bring the top folded pressed edge of the bag down to meet the side edges at the bottom of the opening. Pin to hold and stitch close to this fold edge. To make the casing, stitch 1″ above the previous stitching. Repeat for the back side of the bag. Insert Drawstrings Use a safety pin or bodkin to help slide the drawstrings through the casings. Slide one drawstring through the casing of the bag back and front having ends on the same side of the bag. Insert the other drawstring starting at the other side of the bag, sliding through the casing of the bag back and front having ends on that side of the bag. Tie the ends of the drawstrings together. That completes the lined drawstring shoe bag. Note: If the shoe bag is wide enough for two shoes, you may want to stitch up the center of the bag from the bottom up to (but do not include) the casing through all the layers to create separate compartments for each shoe to help keep them from scuffing. Pin before stitching and test to see if there is enough room for the shoes. If not, you may want to increase the width of your shoe bag. Sew bags any size for anything. Everybody needs a bag for something. Kids love treasure bags. Make big bags and little bags. Give drawstring bags to family and friends for Fathers’ Day, birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, etc. Enjoy sewing bags!
