By Mary Gardner Youd think that in our society there would be allowances for people who chose to take off some time for one reason or another. Youd think that when they were hunting for a job that people would understand some of the personal issues that people have to deal with which interrupts their career flow. Things like having a baby, staying home with children, dealing with a sick parent, taking time off after the sale of a house that provides a nest egg or divorce are a few that Ive heard lately. Yet, the people who are trying to get their career back on track after taking a break, tell a different story. One lady that I coached lately is dealing with a former family business for the past 20 years. She raised her kids and worked full time with her husband. Her whole life was wrapped up in her family business. Later, after her husband cruelty left her and spread rumors about her, she was unemployable. This was even after shed updated class work within her industry. All of her former customers were still with her ex husband so even references were impossible to obtain. She felt completely at a loss of where to start. Another client, who sold his biz and made millions during the process still has the desire to be employed. He took off some time and doesnt have the need to make money, but he was much too young to sit around and watch the stock market every day. He wanted to get back in the market to start working again. He was best in a structured 9-5 environment and didnt want to build another business from scratch. But speaking with potential employers was nearly impossible once they found out he wasnt hungry to work anymore. They perceived he didnt NEED the money so he wouldnt work as hard. Get business cards printed! This can work miracles. While youre looking for work, create a sideline business of consulting of some sort to get the pipeline of customers going. You can even work for free if youre on unemployment and no one needs to know. But, itll get you in work mode and create opportunities for you. 3. Show up at public lectures. Anytime people gather to support an interest, there are going to be others just like you also attending. Strike up conversations with people around you and be sure to ask the speaker some intelligent questions. People are more attracted to individuals who put themselves out there. 4. Create a public workshop. Gather what you know, put it in workshop format and start TEACHING. There is NO better way, besides writing a book, to get noticed quickly. If youre in a city that has opportunities for speakers such as The Learning Annex, thats great. Otherwise, libraries and community college continuing education departments are a great place to get booked. 5. Network with friends. Print up business cards and tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job. Youd be surprised what you will find. If you mention it to someone, theyll know someone who knows someone, etc. When you call and use someones name as a referral, its called a WARM LEAD and people are more than willing to help. Lastly, keep your spirits up during the process by taking care of yourself. Meet with friends and family who are supportive as often as possible. Write in a journal. Work out a few times a week to get your blood flowing. Take a walk near the lake or ocean to bring a sense of tranquility. Read old letters and references about how great youve been in the past. And most of all, support other people who need help too. Its the best way to know that you bring great value to the world. Bringing value is what it is all about. Find a place where you can start bringing value and know that it can lead to something better or more suited to you. It doesnt have to be the RIGHT job. But it can be the job for RIGHT now. You have probably heard it before, but you really dont want to hear it again. It hasnt changed from 5 years ago, from 10 years ago, even from 30 years ago. You want to know what it is? Well, here I go. To lose weight, you need to eat right, exercise correctly, and you will lose weight. That is it. Sounds simple right??!! Well, then why do so many people struggle with it? Because it doesnt happen quickly and it is so hard!!!! To safely lose weight, you are going to want to lose 1-2 pounds a week. This sounds daunting to people who need to lose 100 200 pounds. That means it could take anywhere from a year to 4 years to lose the weight you need. In a now society that just isnt good enough, but it is going to have to suffice. With all our advanced technology, scientists still havent come up with that magic pill. They are trying because someone would make a boatload of money, but it hasnt been done. ACCEPT THAT! There are no shortcuts. It is going to take a lot of hard work, discipline, and support from your family and friends, but it can be done. Here is what to do. Otherwise it is no better than sitting in front of your television watching a Jennifer Lopez video. I told you that you werent going to like what I was going to write. Now, what to eat? This isnt rocket science. Ignore all those fad diets out there. Try this. Get rid of all the crap in your cupboards and dont pretend you dont know what it is. Cookies, chips, ice cream, crackers. I dont care if it says low fat, low calorie, whatever, pitch it. Replace it with fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole wheat items (bread, pasta, etc.). No one ever said they gained weight by eating a bag of baby carrots for a late night snack. Eat 4 to 5 times throughout the day. Eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus healthy snacks in between. This will keep your metabolism up plus give you healthier choices. If you do all of this, you will lose weight. If you think you are eating healthy and exercising properly, but you havent lost weight, then you are DEAD WRONG! It takes some knowledge and discipline, but it will work. Sometimes I am in awe about how unusual it is in this world to see a truly happy married couple. No nagging, no bullsh*t, no rage, no getting even, no ulterior motivesjust unconditional love. Now there is an interesting concept. Unconditional love. What is it? Well, the dictionary describes it as, without conditions or limitations; absolute. The bible describes unconditional as the purest of all loves. It is the love that God has for us and it is that love that allowed our sins to be forgiven 2000 years ago on a wooden cross on Calvary. Unconditional love is usually the kind of love parents share with their children. There are the obvious exceptions but overall, parents love their kids no matter what and without any conditions. You love them when they are good and even when they are bad. You would give them the world if you could and dont expect anything in return. That is unconditional love. But where is the unconditional love in marriage. Two people have pledged their life to one another and yet, there doesnt seem to be any hint of unconditional love anywhere.
